Transfer Turmoil

WHAT THEY SAY

'At this juncture, if he goes, Mysore will be worse than Bangalore in the years to come. We need him!'
-Arun S Padaki

'Every concerned Mysorean should join the movement and stop this mindless transfer'
Social Activist

'If we miss him, we might never get an official like him for the city'
Syed Tanveeruddin | online campaigner

Mysore (by H M Aravind, Times News Network or TNN): From forming civic bodies to cutting down corruption and from increasing efficiency to breathing life into JN-NURM projects, P Manivannan has won people's hearts. Hence they are strongly rooting for continuation of the civic bodies commissioner.

In an online petition campaign launched by a Mysorean, hours after his transfer issue snowballed into a controversy on Wednesday, people are railing the government and arguing for cancellation of the transfer order. Some feel Manivannan is the only person who can stop Mysore from going the Bangalore way.

"At this juncture, if he goes, Mysore will be worse than Bangalore in the years to come. We need him!" This is how Arun S Padkai puts it. A R Char from US says: "Mysore needs a thorough clean-up. It needs Manivannan for at least two years."

Some are betting on him for cutting down red-tapism and corruption. "A highly sincere and honest person whose mere presence in the department will minimise corruption, red-tapism and lethargy. He is indispensable to Mysore," is what N Suresh Prasad from Mysore opines.

Started by activist Syed Tanveeruddin, a resident of Mysore, the petition has picked up pace and the opinions have reached governor Rameshwar Thakur.

Tanveeruddin told The Times of India: "Mysore is lucky to have an official like Manivannan, who has big plans for the city. If we miss him, we might never get an official like him for the city. I launched the online campaign to focus in/on this and even forwarded the link with replies to the governor. It is he (Manivannan) who inspired KAS officer A B Ibrahim to launch a demolition drive in Mysore. Now that he has come here, we should make optimum utilisation of his experience."

Tanveeruddin has earlier run online petitions on social issues including Chamalapura thermal power plant. He wants to generate a public opinion and get it across to the concerned. The petition has been addressed to CM B S Yeddyurappa, chief secretary P B Mahishi and Karnataka High Court chief justice Cyriac Joseph.

And his efforts are being recognised. Social activist and Mysore Grahakara Parishat leader writes: "Every concerned Mysorean should join the movement and stop this mindless transfer." And this is a common opinion on the petition.

The petition has also some angry questions for the new government. N Raghavan asks: "It is not proper to transfer an honest and dynamic person quite frequently. Then where is the good governance promised by every government? The exercise is also turning out to be a lesson for the officials to read the public mind on their expectations and issues."
